Specialty Overview

Regional anesthesiology and acute pain medicine focuses on the peri-operative management of acute pain of the surgical and non-surgical patient using both interventional and non-interventional modes of analgesia.

Fellowship training should result in the development of expertise in the practice and theory of regional anesthesiology and acute pain medicine. Specifically, the scope of this specialty includes: pre-operative evaluation and management of acute pain, including indications and contraindications for interventional pain management techniques; intra-operative application of multimodal analgesia, including regional anesthesia (with or without general anesthesia); post-operative application of regional analgesia in inpatients and outpatients; peri-operative multimodal acute pain management of surgical patients; and, acute pain management of hospitalized non-surgical patients.
