Specialty Overview
Combined residencies are residency programs sponsored by a single institution that provide residents with all of the curricular elements of a categorical ACGME-accredited residency in one specialty as well as the required ACGME curricular elements of a second or third discipline. They are specifically designed to enable residents to complete and become eligible to take the certification examination in the specialties earlier than if they were to have completed the two (or three) residencies in a sequential fashion. Combined residencies, with the exception of Internal Medicine/Pediatrics, are not accredited by the ACGME—they are approved by the respective boards. For example, an Emergency Medicine/Family Medicine program is approved by both the American Board of Emergency Medicine and the American Board of Family Medicine.
